Vienna to Munich by car: Walserberg checks, A8 works, Munich zone

Nearly all of the 438 km from Vienna's main station to Munich's is motorway: the A1 West Autobahn past Linz and Salzburg to the German border at Walserberg, then about 115 km of A8. At a constant 130 km/h, 438 km would take about 3 hours 20 minutes (438 ÷ 130); city driving, lower limits, roadworks and the checkpoint all add to that. Navigation apps can disagree by several minutes on a trip this long, so compare this route with live traffic on Mapssy before you leave.

The route at a glance

The Walserberg service areas at about km 300.6 are the last in Austria. In Germany, at Kreuz München-Süd, you can stay on the A8 to its end at the Mittlerer Ring in Ramersdorf or take the A995, which also meets the Ring.

The northern line via Braunau

Some routers, OpenStreetMap's included, prefer a shorter line of about 405 km: the A25 and the Innkreis Autobahn (also numbered A8 in Austria) to Ort im Innkreis, main roads to Braunau, the Inn bridge to Simbach, about 14 km of single-carriageway B12, then the German A94. Around 50 km of it is ordinary main road, so shorter need not mean quicker. If two apps disagree sharply, check whether one has chosen this line.

Walserberg: German border checks until March 2027

Germany has notified the European Commission of controls along its whole land border with Austria between 16 September 2026 and 15 March 2027. The Federal Police (Bundespolizei) check traffic entering on the A8 at Walserberg; a press release of 9 September 2026 describes a car turned back there on 8 September. The notification also covers smaller crossings such as Braunau–Simbach. Checks are spot checks, not every car, but queues can form at Walserberg.

Bring a passport or national identity card for every traveller, children included; according to the ÖAMTC, a driving licence is not accepted as a travel document. Austria's own notified checks are on its Slovak, Czech, Hungarian and Slovenian borders only, so there is no notified Austrian border control at Walserberg on the way back. Why the checkpoint makes arrival times harder to predict

Apps learn about a queue only once vehicles are crawling in it. Leaving Vienna, the border is about 305 km away, over two hours even at 130 km/h, so the estimate for that point is a forecast from typical patterns, and a checkpoint queue can form or clear abruptly. That is one reason the apps can disagree on this trip, and why the arrival time shown near Salzburg is more reliable than the one shown in Vienna (why the apps disagree).

The vignette, and the free stretch before the border

You need the Austrian vignette from Auhof to Salzburg Nord. In 2026 a digital 1-day vignette costs €9.60 and covers the calendar day of travel only; for a return later in the week the 10-day one at €12.80 is the cheaper choice (ASFINAG, checked 26 September 2026). Section 13(1a) of Austria's Federal Road Toll Act exempts the A1 between the Walserberg border and Salzburg Nord, about 13 km, from the vignette, in both directions. A Vienna–Munich driver gains nothing, because the 280 km before Salzburg Nord need one anyway.

What changes after the border

No toll. Germany charges cars nothing on the Autobahn; its toll is for goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.

No general speed limit, but plenty of signs. A federal regulation recommends 130 km/h for cars, and any posted limit overrides it. Between Kreuz München-Süd and Rosenheim overhead gantries can set variable limits. East of the Inntal junction the A8 has two lanes each way on largely its 1930s alignment, with tight bends, steep grades and long stretches without a hard shoulder, and holiday weekends bring long queues.

Speed-camera warnings off. StVO §23(1c) bars drivers from using, or carrying ready to use, devices that reveal or disrupt speed checks and other traffic enforcement, including such functions on phones. If your app announces speed cameras, turn that off before Walserberg (app set-up guide). Winter rules differ as well: winter tyres and snow chains.

A8 roadworks: a string of bridge replacements

Germany's federal motorway company, Autobahn GmbH, is rebuilding bridges on the old section between the border and Rosenheim. Munich-bound sites in its roadworks data on 26 September 2026:

Short daytime lane closures, such as survey work near Irschenberg in early October 2026, appear at short notice, so check the Autobahn GmbH roadworks map on the day.

Arriving in Munich

The low-emission zone starts where the A8 ends

Munich's Umweltzone is the Mittlerer Ring and everything inside it, and the A8 ends at the Innsbrucker Ring, part of that ring; the Hauptbahnhof is well inside. Cars need a green emission sticker (Umweltplakette) on the windscreen, and the city says this includes foreign-registered and electric cars. It is tied to the number plate, valid in every German zone and can be ordered online from abroad through DEKRA, GTÜ or TÜV.

Diesels meeting Euro 4/IV or older are banned from the zone, Ring included, even with a green sticker, except for residents, deliveries and some other groups; the city puts that fine at €100, or €128.50 with fees. For having no sticker, the Federal Environment Agency gives €100.

Park and ride on the way in

From Neuperlach Süd the U5 runs without a change to the Hauptbahnhof via Ostbahnhof and Karlsplatz. At Neuperlach Süd each further day costs €4.00; Innsbrucker Ring allows at most 24 hours. At both, keep your public transport ticket in case it is checked at the exit.
